Expert Oil Diagnostic Services
Ester oils are increasingly being used as insulating fluids in transformers, due to their excellent dielectric properties and environmental benefits. These oils can be either natural or synthetic, with natural esters derived from vegetable oils and synthetic esters produced through chemical processes. Both types offer
significant advantages over traditional mineral oils.
Advantage of Ester Oil
Environmental Benefits
Biodegradable and non-toxic, more environmentally friendly option compared to mineral oils. This reduces their environmental impact, especially in the event of spills, as they decompose naturally without harmful residues.
Fire Safety
Higher flash point and fire point (typically above 300 °C) than mineral oils, reducing the risk of fire in electrical equipment. This makes them a safer choice for both new installations and retrofitting existing equipment.
Thermal Performance
Better thermal conductivity and can operate at higher temperatures without degrading. This helps in improving the efficiency and lifespan of electrical equipment.
Moisture Absorption
Higher moisture tolerance, which helps in maintaining the integrity of the insulation system. They can absorb more water without compromising their insulating properties, thus protecting the equipment from moisture-related issues.
Ester Oil vs Mineral Oil
Characteristic | Mineral Oil | Ester Oil |
Dielectric Strength | Good but degrades over time | Generally better retention over time |
Thermal Conductivity | Good | Good |
Fire Safety | Lower Flash Point and Fire Point | Higher Flash Point and Fire Point |
Environmental Impact | Non-biodegradable | Biodegradable |
Moisture Handling | Poor | Excellent |
Oxidation Stability | Moderate (without Inhibitor) Good (with Inhibitor) | Good (with Inhibitor) |
Cost | Lower Initial Cost | Higher Initial Cost |
Maintenance | Standard Procedures | May require specific care |
